Both types of control are mounted on the sidewall inside the boat. However, the side-mount is for outboard engines only, and the mechanical box and harness/throttle and shift cables are visible. On panel- or flush-mount controls, only the bezel and handle are visible and the mechanical box, wires, and cables are hidden behind the wall of the boat. Side-mount controls are typically used with lower horsepower outboard engines. The controls are one unit, mounted to the inner wall close to the steering wheel. Included in the side mount control is a warm-up lever for cold-weather starting, a key switch that doubles as a choke, a lanyard safety switch, and trim switch in the handles. As with all Mercury mechanical controls, the handles have a soft grip for comfort.
