Shimanos four-bolt asymmetric pattern with a 110 millimeter bolt circle diameter allows the use of compact or standard gearing on the same crank arms. With a refined X-shaped bolt pattern, the fifth arm, which used to lie in the area where the least amount of torque was applied to the chainrings, is deleted. The orientation of the remaining four spider arms puts them in line with the area of the chainring requiring the most reinforcement, resulting in the same efficient power transfer with a lighter crankset. Crafted from forged and machined aluminum, the chainring itself is stiff and light, and is optimized for use with Shimano HG-EV eleven-speed chains and Ultegra 6800 cranksets.
